I hate writing first drafts, to me the process of writing something and refining it into a better product is necessary but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. As a professional “procrastinator”, the idea of writing something shitty is abhorrent, I would rather wait till the very last moment and write a single draft that I have put a large amount of time into then, pump draft after draft, tweaking and adjusting before the final draft is due. Do I understand that this is not a good idea? Yes, do I often find myself doing it all the time? Absolutely, an interesting question that is asked below the book excerpt is “From what Lamott has to say, is writing a first draft more about the product or the process?”, from what I gathered I believe that Lamott writes these drafts for the process because she has a routine that she likes to follow and execute (simply just getting anything down on paper). I enjoyed this article because it shows the personal experiences of a writer going through her writing routine, but personally I think that this is simply one example of someone’s writing process, I don’t think that this the only way to write, just as I hate writing shitty first drafts, someone like Lamott loves to write them.
